67 Remsen Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201
Located on a desirable tree lined street in Brooklyn Heights, and only one block away from the promenade overlooking Manhattan, the five-story building originally had ten studios – two on each floor.
The clients, who had owned the building for several years, wanted to sell it as a one family home. To make the building appealing, two key components were added. First, the basement was excavated and the neighboring buildings were underpinned which allowed for 10-foot high ceilings. Then a commercial elevator, which included a stop at the roof, was installed thus making the roof inhabitable.
Being that Brooklyn Heights is a designated Landmark area, in order to have the elevator stop at the roof we had to get the project approved by NYC Landmarks Preservation Committee and make sure the bulkhead fit in the context of the street without being too visible from Montague Street, the main street of the neighborhood.
Highlights of the plan include the high ceilings in the basement, a kitchen and dining area on the ground floor with access to the garden, the main living and entertainment spaces on the second floor with its soaring 15-foot ceilings, and the third floor with the two children’s suites. On the fourth floor is the master suite and bathroom, while the fifth floor includes a family room and additional kitchen. Topping it out is the roof garden with an outdoor kitchen. A new set of stairs has been installed at the center of the home under a new skylight, filling the interior circulation areas with light.
Many of the original exterior details had to be kept and restored. A colorful glass window from the original building was discovered behind one of the walls we demolished. This window was restored and is now hanging above the stairs leading to the second floor, facing the entrance to the house.
